The Great Seal of the Confederate States of America was adopted in 1864, late in the war, and this print reproduces its design as it appeared in a reference-style illustration of the kind widely circulated in the early twentieth century. The seal shows George Washington on horseback in the center, surrounded by a ring of text, and its imagery was meant to tie the new Southern government to the founding principles of the United States. Because the seal was used only briefly before the Confederacy collapsed in 1865, impressions of it are relatively scarce, which makes printed reproductions like this one useful to historians and collectors alike.
