The Great Seal of the United States is the subject here, rendered as a wood engraving dated 1878. The seal's reverse side carries the reverse design with the unfinished pyramid of thirteen steps, the eye above it, and the Latin motto Annuit Coeptis, which together hold the nation's oldest symbolic emblems. Adopted in 1782 after a committee of Congress worked through several proposals, the seal has been used to authenticate official documents ever since, and the fine linework of an 1870s engraving shows how carefully such national emblems were reproduced for public audiences.
