Few details survive beyond the title, which suggests a group image gathering American writers rather than a portrait of a single person. Dated around 1866, it appeared just after the Civil War, when many Americans wanted a literature distinct from Britain's and took pride in naming their own authors. The notation "Copyright Deposit" means the print was submitted to register its copyright, a practice that helped the Library of Congress build its collections and keep such material for later study.
