Tinted by hand, this print takes the Independent Order of Odd Fellows as its subject, and the record credits the firm Sarony & Major, a New York lithographic house active in the mid-nineteenth century. The order began in England in 1810 and reached the United States in 1819, when the first American lodge was chartered in Baltimore. Its members pooled dues to pay sick benefits and burial costs, so decorative prints like this one often served as lodge certificates or emblems that members displayed at home. The record does not give a date, but the coloring and style point to the period when fraternal lodges were spreading quickly across American towns.
