Rather than an empty room, this mezzotint shows the United States Senate chamber with portraits of its members, each engraved from a daguerreotype likeness. T. Doney made the engraving from a design by J. Whitehorne, and the portraits came from the National Miniature Gallery of Anthony, Clarke & Co., which had earlier operated as Anthony, Edwards & Co. The Senate met in the old chamber in the north wing of the Capitol, a semicircular room it used until 1859, so the print records both the setting and the faces of the senators of its day.
