Published in New York by Currier & Ives in 1872, this color lithograph groups the first Black men to serve in the United States Senate and House during the 41st and 42nd Congresses. Hiram Revels of Mississippi took his Senate seat in 1870, and a small number of Black representatives from Southern states joined the House in the same years. Currier & Ives sold its prints widely to a general public, so the sheet shows how quickly these political firsts reached ordinary households. It remains a useful record of a brief period of Black officeholding during Reconstruction.
