Rather than a battlefield or a signing, this print shows a quiet moment of devotion: the opening prayer of the Continental Congress, which met in Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia in September 1774. Tompkins H. Matteson painted the scene, and H.S. Sadd engraved it on steel as a mezzotint, published in New York by John Neale in 1848. The Episcopal clergyman Jacob Duché is traditionally credited with reading the prayers that morning, so the picture records how the delegates chose to begin their work before the Revolution had turned to war.
