Oliver Hazard Perry's squadron and the British fleet off Put-in-Bay on Lake Erie form the subject of this engraving, which was drawn by the Irish-born artist J.J. Barralet and engraved by Benjamin Tanner. Perry's victory on September 10, 1813, was a turning point in the War of 1812, giving the United States control of the lake and allowing American forces to advance into Upper Canada. The print was deposited for copyright on October 14, 1814, and the pencilled note reading "with a key" suggests it was issued with a guide identifying the ships and their positions. Its survival as a copyright deposit makes it a useful record of how the battle was presented to the public during the war.
