A photographic reproduction of William H. Powell's 1865 painting shows Oliver Hazard Perry's victory over the British squadron on Lake Erie on September 10, 1813, during the War of 1812. Powell's canvas, which depicts Perry transferring from his flagship to another vessel during the fight, hangs in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington. This print dates from about 1950, when reproductions of such well-known history paintings were widely circulated in schools and libraries. Perry's message after the battle, "We have met the enemy and they are ours," became one of the era's most quoted lines.
