The title promises a "terrific charge of the Mexican lancers," and the scene centers on that cavalry clash at Sacramento on February 28, 1847, a battle near Chihuahua during the Mexican-American War. American volunteers under Alexander Doniphan faced Mexican forces there and came away with the victory. Published in New York by N. Currier that same year, this hand-colored lithograph belonged to a wave of war prints that brought dramatic images of distant fighting to the public, often before reliable accounts reached them.
