The caption refers to one of the best-known anecdotes of the Mexican-American War. At the Battle of Buena Vista in February 1847, Captain Braxton Bragg's artillery battery fired hard on advancing Mexican troops, and the call for "a little more grape" (a cluster of iron balls fired from a cannon) became shorthand for the battle's most dramatic moment. Zachary Taylor's army held the field near Saltillo, and the story of Bragg's guns spread through newspapers and popular prints of the period. Images like this one turned a frontline exchange into a patriotic emblem for readers far from Mexico.
