Few pictures from the Second World War show the two sides of a prisoner-of-war camp together, but this one places German officers and French prisoners in the same frame. The record dates it to sometime between 1940 and 1944, the years after France's defeat in June 1940 sent a large number of French soldiers into German captivity. Many of those men were held in camps across Germany for the rest of the war, where the routines of guard duty, roll calls and rationed daily life shaped the experience of both captors and captives. Images like this one are valuable to historians because they record the day-to-day relationship between the two groups rather than only the battles that led to capture.
