Its title pairs "A war president" with "Progressive democracy," a sharp juxtaposition that points to the 1848 presidential campaign. The catalog dates the print to soon after Lewis Cass was nominated by the Democrats that May, and the phrase "war president" would have carried weight that year, when the Mexican-American War had only recently ended and military heroes were prominent in the race. The lithograph was issued by Nathaniel Currier, whose New York firm produced cheap, topical prints for a broad public, and this one reflects the campaign-season commentary that made his shop well known.
