Vincennes, a 20-gun sloop of war, is named for the town of Vincennes in Indiana, and this hand-colored lithograph shows the ship as a naval vessel of the early 1840s. Nathaniel Currier issued this print from New York around 1845, when his shop was turning out a steady stream of ship portraits for a public eager to follow the navy's voyages. Sloops of war like Vincennes carried the country's flag on long cruises, so prints like this one doubled as both records of a warship's appearance and popular souvenirs of American seafaring.
