Few pictures of Reconstruction-era lawmakers bring so many faces into one frame. This albumen print is a photomontage, a composite built by assembling separate portraits of members of South Carolina's first legislature after the Civil War, the body that met in 1868 under the state's new constitution and included a substantial number of Black legislators. The image was made around 1876, close to the end of Reconstruction, when white Democrats were regaining control of the state and the political gains of these officeholders were under sustained attack. Looking at it now, the montage technique is worth noticing: it presents a legislature as a unified assembly even though its members were photographed separately.
