Here the rival publishers Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst are cast as the Yellow Kid, the bald, big-eared street urchin from Richard Outcault's comic strip, which ran in Pulitzer's New York World. Hearst had lured Outcault to his New York Journal, so both papers ran the character at once, and the fight over him became a symbol of sensational "yellow journalism." This color lithograph appeared in Vim, a New York humor weekly, in the summer of 1898, when the Spanish-American War was at its height and both papers were competing hard for war news.
