A large boulder stands out in this view of the Kentucky Claim at Timbuctoo, a mining camp in Yuba County, and it gives the stripped hillside its scale. Hydraulic mining, which used powerful jets of water to wash gold-bearing gravel down slopes, reshaped many Sierra Nevada foothill claims in the 1860s, when this half of a stereograph pair was published in the Gems of California series. The record notes that the original caption was crossed out, so the exact working area is best read with some caution. The picture still shows how quickly the method altered the land.
