Hydraulic mining on the Yuba River is the subject here, specifically the tail sluices where the spent gravel and water were discharged after the miners had washed out the gold. Hydraulic mining used high-pressure jets of water to blast hillsides into slurry, and the tailings it produced clogged river channels downstream and fed the lawsuits that eventually curtailed the practice in the 1880s. This half of a stereograph was published in 1866 as part of the Gems of California series, so it captures the method at the height of its use, when the sluices were a common sight along Northern California's gold country.
