Few places in the Sierra Nevada show the headwaters of the Yuba River as plainly as the rock formations called the New Hampshire Rocks, the spot this view records. Stereographs from the 1860s, issued in series such as *Gems of California Scenery*, were popular parlor items that let viewers far from the West feel they had seen the mountains for themselves. The Donner Pass route named in the record was the mountain corridor that travelers crossed, and the library holds only one half of the original stereo pair.
