Crystal Lake, in Placer County, appears here beside a rock formation called the Hieroglyphic Rocks. This albumen print is half of a stereographic pair from the Gems of California Scenery series, no. 822, but the Library holds only this one image, so the second view that produced the three-dimensional effect is missing. Prints like this were made in quantity during the 1860s, when parlor stereoscopes brought distant landscapes into middle-class homes, and the Sierra foothills drew strong interest as scenery in the years after the Gold Rush. The caption details come from an old card and have not been independently verified.
