Columbia Gulch, in Tuolumne County, is the setting for this view of a tail flume, the channel that carried spent gravel and water away from a placer mining operation. Flumes like this were a common sight across the Sierra Nevada foothills in the decades after the Gold Rush began, when miners washed gold from creek beds and gravel. The Library holds only one half of this stereograph pair, issued as number 1019 in the Gems of California scenery series, and the 1866 date comes from a caption card whose details have not been verified.
