A tail flume carrying waste from a hydraulic mine empties into Auburn Ravine in this view, one half of a stereograph pair from the *Gems of California* series. Hydraulic miners in the Sierra Nevada foothills blasted gravel banks with powerful jets of water, and the resulting slurry ran off through long wooden flumes into nearby creeks. Over time the debris buried farmland and clogged rivers downstream, and in 1884 a federal court ruling (the Sawyer Decision) largely halted the practice. The record's date and series details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
