Few scenes show the labor behind California's gold rush as plainly as this view of crews hauling sluice blocks for the Blue Gravel claim at Smartsville in Nevada County. Hydraulic mining, which used high-pressure water to wash gold-bearing gravel out of hillsides, was reshaping the Sierra foothills, and blocks like these were set in long wooden troughs to catch the metal. The Library holds only one half of this stereograph pair, issued in the Gems of California Scenery series as no. 1401 and dated to 1866 in its record.
