Grass Valley, in Nevada County, is seen here from the west in number 810 of the *Gems of California Scenery* series. Only one half of the original stereographic pair survives in the Library's holdings, so the picture was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset images into a single view with depth. The town grew out of the gold rush of the early 1850s into one of California's leading quartz mining centers, and views like this one were sold to a public curious about the mining country. The 1866 date comes from an unverified caption card.
