Nevada City, in the Sierra foothills of California, is the subject here, shown from the west side of town as it looked in the mid-1860s. The picture survives as one half of a stereograph, the paired-image format that viewers held to a stereoscope to see a single three-dimensional scene, and it was issued in a commercial series titled "Gems of California Scenery." Gold rush mining had swelled Nevada City into a busy community by this time, and views like this one helped document the hillside settlements that grew up around the diggings. The Library holds only one of the two images, so the matching view is missing from the collection.
