Savage Works, a group of mills in Virginia City, Nevada, is the subject of this albumen print, which Timothy O'Sullivan made around 1868. Virginia City sat at the heart of the Comstock Lode, the silver discovery that drew a rush of miners and turned the high desert into an industrial landscape within a few years. O'Sullivan took the picture for the United States Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel, the survey led by Clarence King, and it appears as plate 95 in the survey's published series. The print records the works that followed the silver strike, a reminder that the survey was as concerned with mineral wealth as with mapping the land.
