Lake Marian, tucked into the Humboldt Mountains of Nevada, is the subject here, a small body of water that the survey party recorded during its work along the Fortieth Parallel. Timothy H. O'Sullivan made the exposure, which was issued as Plate 122 of the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel, a federal survey led by geologist Clarence King under the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The survey's photographers hauled bulky wet-plate equipment across the Great Basin in the late 1860s, and their albumen prints were meant to document terrain for scientists and mapmakers alike. The image's quiet, still water shows how carefully the team framed landscapes as evidence of the region's geology.
