Witches Rocks, a cluster of eroded stone formations in Utah, is the subject here, and this view is plate 18 from the *Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel*. That survey was led by geologist Clarence King under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Timothy H. O'Sullivan, who made much of the survey's field photography, took the picture around 1869, when expedition photographers were recording western landscapes for scientific and mapping purposes. Albumen prints like this one were the standard way such views reached government reports and the public.
