Sugar Loaf, in Washoe, Nevada, was photographed by T. H. O'Sullivan while he worked on the Fortieth Parallel Survey, a federal project led by geologist Clarence King. The albumen print, dated to about 1868, was made for the survey's published report, where it appears as plate 96. O'Sullivan had earlier worked with Mathew Brady's studio during the Civil War, and his large glass negatives required heavy equipment and careful setup, so his landscapes were deliberately composed. The picture shows how these government surveys paired scientific mapping with photography to document western terrain.
