Philippi, the county seat of Barbour County in northern West Virginia, is known as the site of the first battle between Federal and Confederate armies, fought there in June 1861. The Union attack on Confederate troops in the town was a small engagement, but it came early in the war and was widely reported as a sign of the fighting to come. This print's record carries no date, and its shelflist card lists Mrs. M.D. Pool as an associated name, so its maker and the year it was made remain unconfirmed. The copyright notation on the record suggests it was registered for copyright, which is worth keeping in mind when judging how closely it reflects the town at the time of the battle.
