The town of Pilak-li-ka-ha, a Seminole settlement in Florida, is the subject here, shown in flames under the command of General Eustis. Charleston publishers T.F. Gray and James issued this hand-colored lithograph in 1837 as number 8 in a set of eight Views of Florida. The series depicted episodes of the Second Seminole War (1835-1842), a conflict in which the U.S. Army destroyed Seminole villages and crops to force the removal of the tribe. Prints like this one, produced while the war was still underway, reflected and shaped public interest in the fighting in Florida.
