A march named for the battle of Pea Ridge and dedicated to Union general Franz Sigel, this color lithograph is a sheet music cover from the Civil War years. The battle was fought in northwest Arkansas in March 1862, when Union forces under Samuel Curtis turned back a Confederate army, and Sigel led one of the divisions. Sigel was German-born and popular with German Americans, and the cover was printed in Milwaukee, a city with a large German-speaking population, by the firm L. Kurz & Co. for publisher H.N. Hempstead.
