Rather than a view of the event itself, this item is a negative of one section of an invitation to the national inauguration ball held on March 4, 1865, the day Abraham Lincoln began his second term. The 1865 ball took place in the Patent Office building in Washington, a large space suited to the formal evening crowds that inaugural balls drew. The text also names Andrew Jackson, whose 1829 inaugural celebration became known for its crowds, so the invitation links two presidential inaugurations. The shelflist card associates the piece with the firm Dempsey & O'Toole, though that attribution is unverified.
