The record names Abraham Lincoln as the subject and links the print to a William Pate through a shelflist card, though that attribution is unverified and no date has been recorded. Portraits of Lincoln were reproduced in great numbers, first during his rise to the presidency in 1860 and again after his assassination in 1865, when engraved and lithographed likenesses hung in homes, schools and offices across the country. Without a date, the printing method, paper and any inscriptions would be the best clues for comparing it with dated Lincoln images from that period.
