A printed notice offering $100,000 for the capture of Lincoln's assassin names John Wilkes Booth, John H. Surratt and David E. Herold, and three photographs appear with the text. Booth shot the president at Ford's theater in Washington on April 14, 1865, and the reward reflects the government's urgent effort to catch the men tied to the plot. Booth was cornered in a Virginia barn later that month and killed, and Herold was captured with him, while Surratt fled abroad and his 1867 trial ended in a hung jury.
