Few trees in the Calaveras Big Tree Grove carried a name as weighty as this one, a giant sequoia named for Abraham Lincoln and shown here up close to emphasize its height and girth. The grove in the Sierra Nevada had drawn visitors since its discovery in 1852, and this view was published in 1866, the year after Lincoln's assassination, which gave the name particular resonance. The series it belongs to, Gems of California Scenery, sold such views to a public eager to see the state's natural wonders. The height and circumference figures come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
