Two named giants stand out in this view of the Calaveras Big Trees: one labeled Andrew Johnson, listed as 272 feet high and 32 feet around, and another named for the poet William Cullen Bryant, both in Mammoth Grove. Visitors began reaching the grove in the 1850s, and its trees were often named for prominent Americans of the day. This is one half of a stereograph pair from the Gems of California Scenery series, made to bring the giant sequoias of the Sierra Nevada to parlors across the country. The measurements come from an old caption card and are unverified.
