A handshake between the sitting president and the Washington Senators' best-known pitcher gives this photograph its particular interest. Calvin Coolidge, who served as president from 1923 to 1929, was a regular presence at Griffith Stadium, the Senators' home park in the nation's capital, and Walter Johnson, nicknamed "The Big Train," spent his long career with the club and later entered the Baseball Hall of Fame. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington life in the 1920s, took many pictures of such public moments. Its work offers a useful view of how the capital mixed politics and popular sport in those years.
