James A. Garfield held the presidency only from March to September 1881, ending when he was shot in July and died later that summer. The shelflist card links this print to Bufford's (John H.) Sons, a Boston lithography firm that issued many portraits of public figures in the later 19th century, though that attribution is unverified. Portraits like this one were popular with households and often marked a leader's death. The record gives no date, so the image is best read as part of the wave of Garfield imagery that followed his assassination.
