This lithograph takes its title from the start of the conflict, dating the outbreak of the rebellion to 1861, though it was published around 1865, as the Civil War was ending. The record attributes the drawing probably to Christopher Kimmel, and the firm of Kimmel & Forster issued it from its New York address on Canal Street. Printed in black and gray-olive, it belongs to a series of American political prints that gave the public visual summaries of the war and its causes. Looking back from the war's close, such prints often reshaped the events of 1861 into a clear narrative for a northern audience.
