Few places were as personal to Hermann Göring as Carinhall, his hunting estate in the forest north of Berlin, named for his first wife, Carin. This print records a January 1938 visit there by Milan Stojadinović, the Yugoslav prime minister, who is shown being greeted by Göring with an honor guard nearby. Such staged receptions were a routine part of Berlin's efforts to draw Balkan governments closer in the late 1930s. The picture comes from Göring's own photographic album, so it reflects how the regime chose to present its foreign guests.
