Few guests at Carinhall carried as much diplomatic weight as Count Galeazzo Ciano, Italy's foreign minister and Mussolini's son-in-law, who was received at Hermann Göring's country estate in July 1940. A tea reception in his honor was recorded in Göring's own photo album, and this group portrait shows Ciano with Emmy Göring and their young daughter Edda. Carinhall, named for Göring's first wife Carin, lay in the forests near Templin, north of Berlin, and served as both his private retreat and a setting for official entertaining. The summer of 1940 came just after the fall of France, when Axis relations were at a high point of confidence.
