Göring presents Knight's Cross awards to several officers in this May 28, 1940 photograph, which comes from his personal album of public events that year. The album caption names the recipients as Oberstleutnant Gustav Wilke, Oberleutnant Hermann Albert Schrader, Oberleutnant Hellmuth Schreiber-Volkening and Feldwebel August Grauting. The ceremony took place weeks after the German offensive in the West began on May 10, 1940, a campaign in which the Luftwaffe, led by Göring as Reichsmarschall, played a major role. Such presentations were used to publicize the air force's wartime record and the regime's military heroes.
