This photograph, dated March 25, 1938, shows a crowd in Melk, a Danube town in Lower Austria known for its Benedictine abbey, with banners raised above the onlookers. It comes from a photo album kept by Hermann Göring, who was touring Austria in the weeks after German troops entered the country on March 12, 1938, and the album's caption describes a steamer trip from Linz to Tulln with economic discussions held on board. The title and caption were transcribed from old index cards and later revised, so some details are less certain than the date itself. Still, the picture offers a useful view of how the annexation was staged for the public in small river towns as well as in the capital cities.
