Few patriotic prints of the 1880s state a veterans' creed as directly as this one, which presents the three cardinal principles of the Grand Army of the Republic: fraternity, charity and loyalty. The Union veterans' order had been founded in 1866 in Decatur, Illinois, and by the mid-1880s it had built a large network of local posts across the North, making it one of the most influential organizations of former soldiers in the country. The print's copyright belongs to A. C. Leonard of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, whose name appears on the record. Its message reflects how the GAR presented itself: as a brotherhood that cared for comrades and their families as well as a political force.
