Seated and shown three-quarters length, Edwin Austin Abbey appears here in a formal pose that suits a painter who had by then made his name on both sides of the Atlantic. Born in Philadelphia in 1852, Abbey built his early reputation as an illustrator for *Harper's Weekly* before moving to England in 1878, where he became a Royal Academician in 1898. He is best known today for his large murals of the Quest of the Holy Grail at the Boston Public Library. The date of about 1902 comes from an older caption card and has not been independently verified.
