Seated at his desk and turned slightly to the left, William Howard Taft appears in this half-length view taken inside the War Department. Taft led that department from 1904 to 1908 under Theodore Roosevelt, and he won the presidency later that year, so the setting places him near the end of his tenure there. The stereo card was copyrighted by the H.C. White Co., and the caption notes are unverified, so the date and the Secretary of War attribution should be read as approximate. Stereo views like this were popular in parlors of the period, offering a three-dimensional look at public officials before routine news photography was common.
