Here is a 1940 portrait of Diego Rivera, the Mexican muralist, shown in a head-and-shoulders bust turned slightly to the left. Rivera was among the most recognizable artists of his time, known for large public murals and his outsized presence, and by 1940 he had worked across the United States as well as Mexico. The print comes from the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division, so it is best read as documentary portraiture of a public figure rather than a studio fine-art piece. Its soft tonal range and direct gaze make it a useful record of how the artist was presented to the public that year.
