This bust portrait shows Lanford Warren Hastings, turned slightly to the right, though the caption card records no date. Hastings was an Ohio-born lawyer whose 1845 guidebook, *The Emigrants' Guide to Oregon and California*, encouraged American settlers to head west. He is best remembered for promoting a shortcut across the Great Basin, the Hastings Cutoff, which he advertised to emigrant parties in 1846. That route became linked to the Donner Party's disastrous winter in the Sierra Nevada, and it shaped how many later readers judged his role in westward migration.
