Few engraved portraits from nineteenth-century Central America carry as much political weight as this bust of Justo Rufino Barrios, who led Guatemala from 1873 until his death in 1885. A liberal reformer, Barrios expanded coffee cultivation, seized Church property, and pursued a plan to reunite the Central American republics under one government, an ambition that ended when he was killed in battle at Chalchuapa in El Salvador. The caption card gives no date for this wood engraving, so it is best read as a likeness of a leader who remained a prominent figure in Guatemalan public memory.
